#Magic Moments - Soap Experiment!

How does soap work anyway?

Materials: Plate or bowl, soap, pepper and water

Main Learning Outcomes: Science and early literacy skills.

Steps:

(1) First, sit together with your child to read the story, “I Don’t Want To Wash My Hands” by Tony Ross. If you don’t have the book at home, you can listen to it by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaEpVZnXMJA

(2) Fill a bowl with water. Add some pepper flakes so the whole surface is covered.

(3) First, try with clean hands, put your fingers in the bowl and see that nothing happens.

(4) Next, put some soap, (dish soap works too!), on your hands. Put them in the bowl again and watch as all of the pepper particles run away! This is an easy way for little ones to see how soap keeps their hands clean

Tips:

Try finding what else has the same effects. We used dish soap with basil. What else could this work with?
