#Working [Mom/Dad] Moment- Colours!

Today we will mix some art with some science…

Materials: YouTube, card stock or other thicker paper, food colouring, a cookie sheet or other pan with sides, paintbrushes, scissors (optional), 2 or 3 small jars or cups, vinegar and baking soda.

Main Learning Outcomes: Developing fine motor skills, creativity, science concepts and early literacy skills.

Steps:

(1) First, cuddle up with your child to read the story, “Purple, Green and Yellow” by Robert Munch. If you don’t have the book at home, you can listen to it by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G53NguqVe5E

(2) We are going to try some fizzy painting! First start by filling a little vinegar into each cup and adding a different colour of food colouring to each. Then using a paint brush, paint the coloured vinegar all over the cardstock. (Be sure to have the cardstock on the cookie sheet, as it may spill over.) While the paper is still wet, sprinkle baking soda over the wet colour and watch. Play with adding more vinegar and more baking soda. Watch as the colours combine and fizzle. Once you get the desired effect, let it dry and then tap or brush off the remaining baking soda. Now you have your artwork! Cut the paper into shapes if you’d like.

Tips: This is for children of all ages. Remember to talk about what you see with you child and explain the chemical reaction.
